behold, the mighty durian..."the forbidden fruit!"
this thorny fruit is hailed by its southeast asian patrons as "the king of fruits," probably because of its intimidating appearance and odor! the exterior resembles the jackfruit, but its funky smell is its distinguishing factor. you wouldn't want to eat it before a date! breath mints will be powerless!
"durian" comes from the malay word "duri," meaning "thorn." at the durian garden in polomolok, south cotabato, philippines last december, miss iggy had her first encounter of the durian kind! the taste is the complete opposite of its smell, some may probably consider it an "acquired taste," but chef andrew zimmern of "bizarre foods" (who tried it in malaysia) thought otherwise!

Yum! While I don't go out of my way for them (anymore), I certainly do enjoy durian :) Didn't have any on my most recent trip back to Malaysia, so probably on the next trip I'll be going nuts over the fruit again, LoL!
Sounds fascinating. I like to at least try new foods. Any hints as to what it tastes like?
lynne: once you love something, the craving will always be there!
sharkbytes: hello! it tastes somewhat like jackfruit, have you tried that? it's a different kind of sweetness and the tangy flavor lingers in your mouth! you have to try it yourself and formulate your own description! :)
I love Durians! There is another fruit which is similar to Durians but less smelly/foul. We call it Dahit (to the locals in Sabah, East Malaysia).
rofl@an inconvenient fruit! i love it! nice play on words!
