Miss Iggy International

Miss Igorota visits the Vienna International Centre, a.k.a. the UNO City, home to United Nations organizations in Vienna.

Miss Iggy in front of the 22-storey-high D-building, where UNOV (United Nations Office at Vienna), UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) and UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) are based. She loves this spot because the Philippine flag can be seen in front of the building. Can you see it?

Miss Igorota sneaks in one of the conference rooms during the lunch break of a conference on technology transfer and climate change.

anchors away!

The Anker-Uhr (Anker = anchor, Uhr = clock), commissioned by an insurance company called "Der Anker", features 2.80 meter-high copper figures from Viennese history every hour, the only female being Empress Maria Theresia. At 12:00 every day, all twelve figures can be seen.

The Anker-Uhr can be found in the Hoher Markt, the oldest plaza in the city. The Hoher Markt used to be the city's center in the middle Ages.

birthday cookie cake

miss igorota was rather shocked by the number of candles on conniechiwa's birthday cake! she hoped the smoke alarm doesn't go off once the candles were lit. thankfully, it didn't.

atlantic city art center

when you walk all the way past the casinos at the atlantic city boardwalk, you'll find this small art museum that's open to the public for free. underneath the structure where it stands is the crashing waves of the atlantic ocean which is audible.

the art center actually has two buildings, one showcasing works of art and the other with historic displays and memorabilia of atlantic city.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Sarah's is where UP Diliman folk go to to have their alcohol fix. located inside the university campus, this house-turned drinking spot serves your staple beers and side dishes for all those celebratory/getting-over-an-agony/let's-sit-and-talk-awhile moments. it's located at cp garcia street beside likha-diwa restaurant near krus na ligas and is accessible via the UP Ikot jeep.

will work for peanuts

miss iggy was pleased to meet mr. peanuts in atlantic city. he was quite a gentleman, err, peanut--tipping his hat to her in greeting.

oh, down into the terminal both of us smiled

It’s gotten quite cold in Vienna in the past two weeks, and although Miss Igorota is used to the cool Benguet breeze, she’s freezing! Just look at her cheeks, they’re all red from the cold weather.

Here she just alighted from the S-Bahn, also known as Schnellbahn (Fast Train in English). The S-bahn is the train of choice for commuters traveling from the suburbs to the city and back.

Miss Igorota at the Praterstern terminal:

According to Wikipedia, the station is being used by 35,000 people daily and is 6,000 square-meter big. Behind Miss Igorota, one can see the Riesenrad, the ferris wheel that’s one of Vienna’s sights to see.

giant bears...that care!

miss igorota cares for the care bears and wishes she can manipulate the clamp that can release at least one of them from their glass cage.

donde esta la biblioteca?

this is the local free public library where conniechiwa borrows CDs, DVDs, and foreign language audio CDs. she still hasn't returned the french and german CDs after a month, even after she's transferred them to her mp3 player. good thing people can renew their materials online.

from september to may, this library is open even during sundays.

hallo, aldi!

miss igorota is delighted that an aldi store opened in rockaway. during this economic crisis sweeping america, it sure helps to still be able to buy affordable grocery and household items. they also promote the "green lifestyle" by encouraging people to bring their own reusable shopping bags, or simply shop bagless. if you choose to use their plastic bag, you have to buy it according to size.

aldi is also said to have originated in germany, because it's really short for "ALbrecht DIscount."

Manila International Bookfair 2008

Photobucket

it's great that events like these are so well-attended that it rivals the population density of divisoria during christmas time. according to a recent study by the Philippine National Book Development Board, the number of Filipinos who consider reading as a hobby has increased. and with events like these, where a multitude books are sold at discount prices, love for reading will still go strong in the midst of cybertechnology and instant gratification.

miss igorota is happy to meet some of the best-known book characters in Filipino Childrens Literature:

Photobucket
si Matsing at Pagong. (monkey and turtle). monkey thinks it is better to plant the upper half of the banana tree, the one with leaves and thinks that he has outwitted the turtle who took the lower half.

Photobucket
errr... miss iggy forgot to check who this is. she could be some important bird though, heh.

Photobucket
with mariang makiling. a goddess who lives in the mountain and helps the people.

Photobucket
and juan tamad (lazy juan) displaying an extreme case of vegetarianism. rather than plucking the fruit off the branch and hurting the entire tree, he waits for the fruit to fall naturally and land in his mouth. or he could be just the laziest bum ever. we don't know for sure.

the book fair ends today. kudos to Ilustrador ng Kabataan (InK) for the utterly wonderful sculptures. most books are published by Adarna House.

union square

the new miss igorota got to see a bit of new york. here she is at the union square subway station on 14th street.

she would have had more photos had it not been for the afternoon downpour that drenched the city, and conniechiwa's untimely upset stomach and uncomfortable shoes.

UP Main Library

Photobucket

some itty-bitty facts about Gonzales Hall known as the UP Main Library:

1. this is where the original Oblation statue is stored (3rd floor)
2. favorite jump-off point for suicidal people
3. is built on sinking ground (it is said that it sinks about an inch per year. haha)
4. for sleep-deprived students, this is an excellent place for napping.
5. it is now a wifi hotspot! yay!
6. used to be where the College of Fine Arts is at.
7. now housing the Institute of Library Science.
8. the UP Mountaineers tambayan is located beside the building.
9. ironic enough that the up fair is held on the sunken garden where the main lib is located. concerts rock the entire place haha

and

10. it is opposite these street signs:

yao ming igorota!

guess what came in my mailbox today!

a new igorota doll from the gorgeous gingmaganda! and she's much taller, too!

i showed her to my sister and she looked at me incredulously. she thinks i'm crazy trying to photograph this doll in public places. haha. she doesn't understand that this is a collaborative art project.

her green outfit matches my j.crew purse perfectly, too!

thank you, ging! i'm not disposing the old one...but this new doll will come with me to new york this friday! :)
